More than three thousand people attended a winter farmers’ market in Old Town Fort Collins on December 12th. Over half the vendors were selling veggies and other local food products. I think that’s remarkable and a great sign of the demand for local foods. I finally saw it for myself this past weekend. The Fort Collins Winter Farmers’ Market, at the Opera Galleria, is sponsored by Be Local Northern Colorado.

aturday January 16 2010 . Fort Collins had a Winter Indoor Farmer’s Market.
The long drive was the start of a great adventure.
The down town area was packed with people.
Parking places were available four blocks away.
I discovered that I could have parked in a parking garage that was a half a block from the super event.
I had a great time meeting people and giving out Business Cards.
The internet is great, however I prefer to network on foot.
I had the privilege of meeting a large number of optimistic growers, crafters and the Co-Director of Be Local Northern Colorado.
Downtown Fort Collins at 123 North College is the Opera Galleria- Building.
Taking photos and talking , lead me to an unexpected educational experience.
I learned that Africanized Bees do not like the Cold Climate.
They also have a genetic glitch that causes them to start a new honey hive, after the old one is full.
They self destruct because they move leaving the full hive behind and not having enough food to last out the winter in their new home.
During my youth I was exposed to bees, in an Old School House full of hives, near Model Colorado .
The entire group of Kids would be given Wax in a jar that was soaked in Honey.
This was the shavings caused by the swipe of an electric hot knife.
This conversation brought back some great memories.
That Farmer’s Market Spirit could be observed in the smiling faces that reflected happy hearts.
Friendships are contagious .
