This article on “The Looming Food Crisis” hit home when I read it. With farmland across the country disappearing to housing developments, and most large farms having long ago switched to monocrops, we now face another danger. Land that was once used to grow foods crops are now being turned over to biofuel crops. While I surely don’t blame farmers for wanting to have a chance to make a decent living, we really must consider sustainable methods of food production. If biofuel crops edge out food crops, where will we be? If an overwhelming majority of this fine nation’s farms move to biofuel crops, how will we feed ourselves? If indeed we have hit peak oil, and fuel is becoming scarce, how can we expect to continue to get food produced in other states, yet alone other countries? Now, perhaps more than ever, supporting local growers is critical. Buying local food has always made sense, but now it even more important to support our local growers.

We have added a new distributor in Nederland.
As I look at our web stats, a lot of people are finding our online version of the Rocky Mountain Growers Directory in their searches for Colorado related items such as beef, pork, lamb, raw milk, eggs, fruit, vegetables, feed, seed sources, farmers markets, organics and many other keywords. Our hard work to get our site to have high search rankings and be highly visible is paying off. The other part of the hard work that Tracy & I are doing is contacting not only growers and ranchers, but potential advertisers and distributors to help us make the printed directory a reality. While a web directory is a great thing, many people still prefer a good old fashioned printed copy. Printing and distributing the directory is expensive. Since we are a grass roots organization and not corporate funded, your advertising support or donations will make the directory a reality, and show consumers that you support your local food economy. Contact us today to be a part of it!

We have added a new distributor in Woody Creek.
We continue to get a great response from people about this project. People are finding us in their web searches for local food, consumers tell us they can’t wait to have the printed directory in their hands. Many of the organic and sustainable growers we have been talking with think it is a great idea, and plan on joining once their busy season of growing, harvesting, attending farmers’ markets and fulfilling CSA’s slows down in the fall. (And we think we are busy!) Tracy & I thank everyone for their interest and suppostive words, and look forward to providing Colorado with the best directory to sustainable food. Don’t be left out! Sign up to be a part of the directory!
